Discover the Central Jungle: Oxapampa and Pozuzo in 4 Days

Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and lush nature of the Peruvian Central Jungle. This 4-day, 3-night package is designed to offer you a complete experience that balances adventure, history, and relaxation. Explore the heritage of Austro-German colonists in the charming valleys of Oxapampa and Pozuzo while connecting with the local flora and fauna. From hikes through ancient forests to tasting unique flavors and interacting with communities, each day is full of discoveries. Our itinerary includes the region’s highlights: walks through picturesque towns, visits to hidden waterfalls, and sensory experiences at coffee and cocoa farms. All of this, with the comfort of transfers, lodging, and selected meals to ensure an unforgettable adventure.

8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.: Arrival in Oxapampa. A guide will be waiting for you at the bus terminal or airport. After a short transfer, you'll check in at your hotel, a cozy place that reflects the local architecture. Take a moment to settle in and refresh.
9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.: Oxapampa City Tour. This walking tour will take you to the Plaza de Armas (Main Square), surrounded by beautiful gardens and the typical mountain town design. You'll visit the Oxapampa Church, a wooden structure that has become an icon of the town. You'll stroll through the historic Barrio de Chontabamba, with its wooden houses and flowered gardens, and learn the history of the pioneers who founded these lands.
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.: Lunch at a local restaurant. Enjoy the gastronomy of the Central Jungle, which blends Andean and German influences. Try a delicious tacacho con cecina or a local meat stew.
2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.: Exploration of the Protection Forest. We'll venture into the San Matรญas-San Carlos Protection Forest. You'll walk on well-maintained trails under a canopy of ancient trees. The hike culminates at a hidden waterfall, a perfect place to take photos and feel the energy of nature. Your guide will help you identify native birds and plants.
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.: Return and rest. After the hike, we will return to the hotel for a well-deserved rest.
7:30 p.m.: Dinner. Enjoy a relaxed dinner. Optional: Visit one of Oxapampa's craft breweries. Try their local pilsner, stout, or pale ale and savor the local nightlife.

8:00 a.m.: Breakfast. A full breakfast to recharge before the adventure.
9:00 a.m.: Trip to Pozuzo. Get ready for a scenic journey of about 2.5 hours. The road winds through the jungle, offering panoramic views, natural tunnels formed by vegetation, and a chance to spot wildlife.
11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.: Arrival and tour in Pozuzo. Upon arrival, you'll cross the Emperor Guillermo I Suspension Bridge, a symbol of the colonists' tenacity. In the Plaza de Armas of Pozuzo, you'll see the distinctive architecture, with painted wooden houses and gabled roofs.
1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.: Lunch in Pozuzo. Here the food is an even stronger fusion. Don't miss the chance to try the fried trout or the apple strudel, a traditional dessert.
3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.: Living history at the Francisco Schafferer Museum. Explore this museum that exhibits tools, photographs, and personal belongings of the first colonists. Then, visit the San Josรฉ Church, a replica of the original church that stands as a testament to the community's faith and culture.
5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.: Free time in Pozuzo. We suggest a walk by the Pozuzo River or a visit to a local bakery to buy artisan bread and cookies.

8:00 a.m.: Breakfast in Pozuzo.
9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.: Hike to El Tirol Waterfall. One of Pozuzo's gems. The hike is of moderate difficulty and takes you along a trail surrounded by trees and the sound of the river. 2:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.: Experience at a Cacao or Coffee Farm. Visit a family farm where they will teach you the entire process: from harvesting the beans to fermentation and roasting. You'll be able to participate in the process and, of course, taste the freshly made chocolate or coffee. A unique sensory experience.

    Recommendations:

Clothing: The climate in the Central Jungle is warm and humid. We recommend wearing light cotton clothes, shorts, short-sleeved shirts, and comfortable walking shoes or sandals. It’s also a good idea to bring a light jacket or windbreaker, as nights can be a bit cooler. Don’t forget a hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun.
Protection: The jungle has sun and mosquitoes. Pack a good insect repellent and high-SPF sunscreen.
Footwear: Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes, ideally trekking shoes, for the walks on the forest trails and to the waterfalls.
Money: It’s best to carry cash. Although there are ATMs in Oxapampa and Pozuzo and some establishments accept cards, in rural areas or small shops, cash payment is the only option.
Reusable Water Bottle: To stay hydrated and reduce plastic use, bring your own bottle. You can refill it at the hotels.
Plastic Bags: Bring a few bags to store your wet or dirty clothes, especially after hikes.
Personal Pharmacy: Although the guide will carry a basic kit, it’s advisable to bring your personal medications, as well as painkillers and motion sickness pills if you need them.
Attitude: Maintain an open mind to enjoy the culture, gastronomy, and relaxed life of the jungle. Be respectful of the local community and the environment.

    Important Documentation

Make sure to bring the following documents to avoid any setbacks during your trip:

Identification Document: Don’t forget to bring your DNI if you are Peruvian, or your Passport / Foreigner ID Card if you are a foreigner. It is essential for hotel check-ins and any security checks.
Tickets: Have your round-trip bus or plane tickets to Oxapampa on hand.
Reservations: Although the agency will handle the details, it’s useful to have a digital copy (on your phone) of your tour package reservation confirmation.
Copy of Documents: It is recommended to carry a physical or digital copy of your identification document in case of loss or emergency.
