Your adventure begins early with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco. After a 3-hour journey through picturesque valleys, you'll arrive in Mollepata for breakfast. The trek then begins with a hike to the impressive Humantay Lake, famous for its turquoise waters surrounded by glaciers. The view is the perfect prelude to what's to come. In the afternoon, you'll head to the base camp in Soraypampa, a magical place at the foot of the snow-capped mountains.
This is the longest and most challenging day of the trek. After an energizing breakfast, you'll begin the 4-hour ascent to the highest point, the Salkantay Pass, at 4,630 meters above sea level. From here, you'll be rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of the Salkantay and Humantay snow-capped peaks. After a well-deserved rest, you'll begin a dramatic 3-hour descent through the "eyebrow of the jungle" until you reach the camp in Chaullay.
Today's trek takes you to a tropical climate. You will enter the jungle, discovering lush vegetation with orchids, waterfalls, and local plantations of coffee, bananas, and avocados. The natural beauty of the area is amazing. You will pass through several small towns before arriving at La Playa, where you will take local transportation to the town of Santa Teresa to spend the night.
The morning offers you the option of participating in a zip-line activity or walking directly to Hidroeléctrica. The path is spectacular, following the river and train tracks through a jungle landscape. After a 3-hour hike, you will arrive at Hidroeléctrica, where you will have lunch. Then, a final 3-hour walk along the tracks will take you to Aguas Calientes, the base town for Machu Picchu.
The big day. You will wake up very early to take the bus up to the entrance of the citadel. You will enjoy a 2-hour guided tour of the main ruins of Machu Picchu, learning about its history and mysteries. Afterwards, you will have free time to explore on your own, meditate, or simply admire the views. In the afternoon, you'll take the train back to Ollantaytambo, and a bus or van will take you back to your hotel in Cusco.
